Hokkien Mee At Kampung Juru, Penang

This is 'Kampung Juru Cocoa Tree Hokkien Mee' located at No. 302, Jalan Tokong, Juru on mainland Penang. It is about 15 to 20 minutes, depending on the traffic condition, from Autocity in Prai. It is opened from late morning till about 4pm but sometimes selling out at 3.30pm once the soup dries up. It is closed on the 29th day of each chinese calendar month.

A good hokkien mee stall which I usually frequent when I am in mainland Juru or short cutting through to Bukit Minyak Industrial Park. The yellow mee prawn soup is garnished with kangkong, sliced lean pork meat, sliced boiled egg, taugeh (bean sprouts), fried crispy onions and the special chili paste is a must add-on. The more chili paste, the better it taste.

Kampung Juru is a small new village and here is where you can find many traditional home-grown cooked food outlets opened all around. Hokkien mee is just the main stuff I liked here cooked by this lady, pictured. The recipe has been passed down from the older generation. Not that old as the old lady is still around somewhere in the house.

Folks here will know this place well. If you are lost nearby, just mention, "Kampung Juru Cocoa Tree Hokkien Mee Stall?". The cocoa tree grows right in front of the stall-cum-house providing a cool shade for patrons. Besides the signature Hokkien Mee, it also serve Penang Laksa (Juru style hence Juru taste which is slightly different from Penang island), prawn fritters that is usually ordered with the Penang Laksa and finally they also have Lor Mee. Some customers will order Hokkien Mee soup mixed with Lor Mee gravy.

Anytime, customers will drive or ride-in for take-away orders like this mystery lady with a covered freakish hunchback, extra torso and legs sticking out. This shows how tasty the food here is, that this lady daringly venture out in broad daylight. Yummy does matter!!

Empty seats? Not really. I came at a sightly odd hour this day. Around 11.30am, it was after breakfast yet before lunch time, so that I can eat two bowls peacefully under the cocoa tree and take some photo shots discreetly. It is usually packed during lunch time which I will usually avoid. Besides a variety of cut fruits and drinks available here, those craving for hot drinks, coffee or tea, can head on to the nearest Starbuck, Coffee Bean or Old Town Kopitiam in Autocity, Prai after their meal here.

For those lazy to go far, a Snack Corner is available......

......for some discerning customers, making difficult choices are real tough.

Can't resist taking another shot of customers making difficult choices.

My 2nd big bowl finally arrived, which is a norm for me. The special fried chili paste plays a very important role in making the soup yummy, spicy and super tasty. A unique taste indeed that tantalize my taste bud.

How to get to here? It is located at Jalan Tokong, Kampung Juru, Juru, Penang. Bon Apetite!!
